SOUTH WAIRARAPA COUNTY AREA ! POSITION AT TE WHARAU. i SCHOOL TEMPORARILY VACATED. A visit to the Longbush, Gladstone and Te Wharau districts was paid yesterday by Mr Ben Roberts, M.P. The new Gladstone School stood up to the shake well. In the old school building and residence the chimneys are down. The top of the chimney is broken off at the Te Wharau School and the children meantime are being accommodated in the Golf Room. Mr F. C. H. Cotter’s store and residence is badly knocked about. The house of Mr Alex Ross, Longbush, was also severely shaken and was shifted. Major Skey’s residence at Clareville was badly battered by the shake but thanks to the help of a party, of soldiers a good clean-up has been effected, for which assistance the occupiers are most grateful. Mr Roberts states that 20 tons of iron for making water tanks has been sent to Masterton and plumbers in other towns should make application., through their merchants in the usual way if they need supplies. Special permits for those who had lost their tea and sugar would be obtainable at post offices in a day or two. Residents of Waihake report that large cracks have been left in the ground in many parts of the district. Some of the cracks emitted clay and sand. In some places the cracks have been tested out for depth and a six foot pole could not find the bottom of many of the crevices. A start was made yesterday to dismantle the clock from the Carterton Post Office tower, after which the towei’ itself will be removed. There are 'approximately 1000 chimneys down in Carterton borough. In 143 dwellings urgent chimney repairs are required.
CONDITIONS AT MARTINBOROUGH Further sharp earthquake shocks were felt yesterday and last night in Martinborough where restoration work is now under way. The damage in the district is far more extensive than was at first estimated.
BED OF LOWER LAKE. SAID TO HAVE RISEN. As a result of the earthquake it is reported that the bed of the Lower Wairarapa Lake has risen considerably.
Q BOARD WANTED IN MASTERTON PRIVATE HOMES. FOR VISITING TRADESMEN. Full board is required in private homes in Masterton for a further 50 tradesmen. About half of that number is arriving this afternoon and the remainder tomorrow. Fifty men have already been placed in Masterton homes. All hotels and boarding houses are fully occupied. Residents able to offer beard are requested to give particulars of the accommodation available to the Central Office, Municipal Building, as soon as possible.
SYMPATHY MESSAGES ONE FROM THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT. CONCERN AT DOMINION’S LOSS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The following telegram lias been received from the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs: — “His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom have learned with great concern that the damage caused by the recent earthquake in New Zealand has proved more serious than was at first thought. We realise how this has added to . the burden of New Zealand at this difficult time, and we send our sincere sympathy to the Government and people.” The following cablegram has been received by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, from Mr Louis Scott, president of the New Zealand Association, All members of the New Zealand Association extend their deepest sympathy to sufferers from earthquake.
