MAIN GERMAN THRUST
APPARENTLY DEVELOPING IN SOUTH RUSSIA Attempt to Divide and Isolate Soviet Armies AND OPEN WAY FOR DRIVE INTO CAUCASUS LITTLE CHANGE IN SEBASTOPOL SITUATION LONDON, June 29. The German drive in the Kursk sector may be the start of a major offensive with the object of dividing Marshal Timoshenko’s forces from the Russian central armies based on Moscow. The drive in the Kharkov area is apparently aimed at threatening Rostov. The Germans reached Rostov last autumn, but were promptly driven out again. i The enemy has already got astride the most direct line of communication between Moscow and the Donetz Basin. The object of these operations may be to divide the Soviet armies into three isolated sectors. The “Red Star’’ states that counter-attacks in one sector of the Kharkov front caused the Germans to withdraw with considerable losses. There is little change in the Sebastopol area, where the Russian defenders are fighting back as stubbornly as ever.
