AT A STANDSTILL
WEEKEND WORK ON AUCKLAND WHARVES. MERCHANTS AND SHIPPERS BLAMED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 28. Work on the Auckland waterfront was at a standstill for most of the weekend because of congestion of cargo in the wharf sheds. The failure of merchants and other shippers to take quick delivery of landed cargoes was blamed by officials for the stoppage. “With a solitary exception, work on every ship discharging cargo had to be stopped and the gangs laid off,” said the Waterfront Controller, Mr W. J. Cuthbert. “Delays from the same cause, cargo piling up in the sheds, have occurred before, but the latest hold-up is the worst.” He added that most of the cargo concerned was important. Work had also been held up on loading operations because shippers had not sent their cargo to the wharf. The Auckland Harbour Board had given every possible co-operation in the matter. Mr Cuthbert added that the whole question of cargo storage and removal was to be investigated by the Waterfront Control Commission, which was sending a representative to Auckland.
