SOUTH WAIRARAPA

TOUR BY MR B. ROBERTS SOME PRECAUTIONS TAKEN AT MARTINBOROUGH. TWO BUILDING FRONTS IN BAD CONDITION. Visits to all parts of the Wairarapa electorate are being paid by Mr Ben Roberts, M.P. Yesterday, Mr Roberts proceeded to Martinborough and Pirinoa, today he went to Taueru and Tinui and on Monday he will probably visit Te Wharau. At. Martinborough Mr Roberts found the facades of the W.F.C.A. Ltd. and Messrs Pain and Kershaw Ltd. to be in a very dangerous condition and stops were immediately taken to have the street roped off, to exclude the public. An Army picket was also placed round the danger zone. The county and borough authorities had a combined organisation, said Mr Roberts and were working together very methodically. The damage in the town area was being assessed by wardens and county councillors were doing similar work in their areas. A Public Works engineer would visit Martinborough on Monday io report on the damage. Working under the local authorities, Public Works engineers were determining whether buildings were safe or not. The Mayor of Martinborough, Mr C. R. Holmes, and the County Chairman, Mr A. B. Martin, both asked him to express their thanks to the Prime Minister for the promptness with which he had taken action to relieve the position. Thanks were also expressed to Mr Roberts for his personal activities. Mr Roberts said that one of the first tasks to be put in hand after the most urgent work had been attended to should be steps to ensure that all dairy factories were in good working order for the opening of the season in the near future. He would make representations in that direction when he visited Wellington tomorrow. At Pirinoa, excellent work was done by a party of soldiers, who assisted the local storekeeper to clean up his shop, where everything was thrown about, in confusion.
