Wellington Churches Damaged. Churches in and around Wellington were damaged by the earthquake on Wednesday night. The structure of St Michael of the Angels, Kelburn, is so weakened that it has been closed till a report on it has been obtained. The baldaquin of marble and Oamaru stone above the high altar at the Basilica, Hill Street, fell down during the shake. It was completely destroyed, and also broke part of the altar itself. Portion of the gable of the Cambridge Terrace Congregational Church will have to be rebuilt. Education Board Elections. Elections for vacant seats on the Wellington-Education Board will be held on July 15. Nominations have closed, and the present chairman, Mr W. V. Dyer, has been returned unopposed for the Hutt-Petone urban area. Mr H. Duckworth and Mr W. R. Nicol, both sitting members, have been returned unopposed for the Marlborough Ward of the rural area and the Masterton urban area respectively. The following nominations have been received for the Wairarapa ward of the rural area: Colonel T. W. McDonald (sitting member) and Mr H. J. McKenzie; one vacancy. Seed Potatoes. The Potato Control Order and Price Order for seed potatoes was gazetted last night. The latter order is necessary because the table potato price order dealt only with a portion of the potato crop, and because the increased acreage of potatoes required next season for civilian and army consumption will create a heavy demand for seed potatoes. The order controls the price of such potatoes. In order to obtain sufficient seed potatoes for next seasn’s crop it is essential to conserve all seed and so the order establishes standards for seed potatoes which automatically increase the amount of seed potatoes which will be available for next season. The use of seed potatoes as food is prohibited, and no person may sell any seed potatoes unless he is satisfied they are to be used as seed.
Frost in Masterton. A frost of 8.2 degrees was registered in Masterton this morning. Girl Injured. A seven-year-old girl, Rosemarie Hitchens, of St. Bride’s Convent, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday, with a cut on the head. She suffered the injury when she struck her head on a piece of iron brought down by the earthquake. Her condition this morning was reported to be satisfactory.
