MAJOR OFFENSIVE

NOT YET OPENED. ACCORDING TO GERMAN SPOKESMAN. LONDON, June 25. Big tank battles are raging on the Kharkov front. A German attempt to drive in an armoured spearhead appears to have failed, the Russian:.countering with artillery and antitank rifle fire and then sending in their own tanks, which are stated to be more heavily armoured than those used at the beginning of the war. The Germans are pressing principally northward, and eastward of Kharkov in an effort to straighten their line and eliminate the threat to their right flank. They are also trying to

secure a hold on the Kharkov-Rostov railway in order to mass troops and supplies for a drive on Rostov. The German military spokesman declared: “The German offensives in the Volkhov region and south-eastward of Kharkov are still preparatory actions which cannot be regarded as the beginning of the German major offensive.”
