AGAIN HIT HARD

JAPANESE BASES NORTH OF AUSTRALIA NIGHT RAIDS ON RABAUL & DILLI. ENEMY PLANES REPELLED AT PORT MORESBY. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, June 26. After a week devoted to reconnaissance flights, the Allied air forces yesterday hit out again at three of the Japanese bases north of Australia, and the latest south-west Pacific headquarters communique reveals that our bombing forces caused considerable destruction in their offensive sweep. Our attacks were directed against Dilli (Timor), Rabaul and Salamaua. Night raids were made on Rabaul and Dilli, where direct hits were scored on enemy-occupied buildings and large fires were started. At Rabaul, where the aerodrome and building areas were attacked, the destruction was so effective that fires were visible 60 miles from the target area. At Salamaua enemy troop quarters and supply points were attacked with bombs and machine-gun fire. We had no losses in any of these operations. A large force of Japanese Zeros attempted to raid Port Moresby yesterday, but were intercepted by our fighters, which apparently seriously damaged five Zeros. Four of our fighters were hit by machine-gun fire, but all returned safely to their base.
