SITUATION IN EGYPT Enemy Advance Towards Mersa Matruh SUCCESSES OF BRITISH SUBMARINES IN MEDITERRANEAN ' SEVERAL AXIS SUPPLY SHIPS DESTROYED LONDON, June 26. The tn a,in enemy forces advancing’ towards Mersa Matruh are still some way behind the vanguard. TJhte whole situation is steadily moving towards a climax. Enemy advance forces, which are constantly being harassed, are reported to be 30 miles west of Mersa Matruh. The enemy is gradually working towards the coast road and the railway. Intensive attacks on enemy bases have been carried out in the past 24 hours by the R.A.F. and South African bombers and fighter-bombers. A heavy bombing attack was made on Wednesday night on objectives at Tobruk. American Liberators concentrated on small ships in the harbour and British planes on land targets. Enemy air activity was again on a small scale last night. A visit was paid to our positions east of Mersa Matruh. Four of our planes are missing. British submarines have inflicted further losses on enemy supply ships in the Mediterranean. 1 One submarine torpedoed a large enemy freighter. A heavy explosion followed and it is considered the ship was destroyed. Another laden ship was sunk and a smaller supply ship was also destroyed. Malta-based aircraft attacked an enemy convoy near Taranto. Over Malta, two enemy bombers and two dive-bombers were shot down in small-scale raids. Yesterday fighters shot down two German fighters.
