CARTERTON
RED CROSS SOCIETY SUB-CENTRE MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The third annual meeting of the Carterton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society was held on Monday. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Stubbs, Sorensen, Taverner and Misses Vaughan and Ingley. Mr D. L. Taverner was in the chair. The annual report and balance sheet was read and adopted, together with reports from the V.A. and the Transport sections. Mr Taverner asked to be relieved of the duties of president owing to stress of other activities. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs L. J. Loftus; vice-presidents, Mesdames Cole, Every, Taverner and Mr D. L. Taverner; secretary, Miss C. Berrill; treasurer, Mr C. C. Callander; committee, Mesdames Beaven, Udy, Stubbs, Sorensen, Fairbrother, J. Fisher, together with two representatives from the Transport and V.A. sub-committees. It was decided to make an effort to secure a bigger membership list. The committee wish to thank the lecturers, Dr Morton, Mrs Marshall, Miss Hitchens and Mr Martin, V.A. section, Miss Van Stavern, Miss Birch, Lieut. Hartman, Sergt. Dewar, the Dalefield Dairy Co., County Council, School Committee, Fire Brigade, P. and A. Society and Hughan’s, Ltd., for services rendered, and St John Ambulance for the use of stretchers.
BOY SCOUTS ENJOYABLE EUCHRE PARTY. On Wednesday evening there was a fair attendance at the Band Room when the weekly card tournament was held by the Boy Scout committee. Tire prizes were won as follows: Ladies, Mrs Birchall 1, Mrs Hurndell 2; men, Mr H. T. Ray 1, Mr Ammundsen 2. Church Service. A Church of England service will be held at Waihakeke at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Farewell Gathering. Tomorrow evening a farewell social gathering will be held in honour of Mr and Mrs Traymar and family at the Belvedere school. Mr Traymar. who has been sharemilking at Belvedere, is leaving the district. Personal. Mrs A. E. Booth, of Park Road, Carterton, is visiting Auckland. His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral of New Zealand, Sir Cyril Newall, made an inspection of the earthquake damage in Carterton yesterday afternoon. Later he called on the Mayor of Carterton, Mr D. L. Taverner, and expressed his sympathy with the people of the district in their misfortune. Patriotic Dance. At the Parkvale Hall tomorrow evening a patriotic dance will be held and special preparations have been made for the enjoyment of patrons. Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra will provide the music. Removal of Quarters. Owing to earthquake damage at the P. and A. Society’s building in Memorial Square the offices of the Wairarapa South County Council will be in rooms at the “Daily News” premises, Car ter ton.
