PIRINOA

PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE RESIGNATION OF PROMINENT WORKER. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Patriotic Committee was held on Tuesday evening, Mr Macdonald presiding over . a fair attendance of members. An apology for absence was received from Mr S. McIntosh, who is in the Rotorua district. The balance sheet was read by the secretary. Mr S. Thomas, and was considered satisfactory. The secretary reported that he had forwarded the sum of £5 15s to Martinborough for the Heart to Heart Appeal. A letter of resignation was received from Miss J. Scrimegour. The chairman expressed the regrot of the committee at Miss Scrimegour’s pending departure. She had been a most energetic and active member of the committee and her departure would be keenly felt. The chairman expressed the hope that she would carry on her activities wherever she decided to settle. it was resolved that a day be arranged for preparing parcels for sending to local soldiers who’were serving overseas. Advice has been received that the local soldiers overseas are regularly receiving their parcels.

Personal Items. Mr and Mrs J. McLean are the guests of Mr and Mrs Mcllwraith, Kaiwaru. Private D. McLean is spending part of his leave with Mr and Mrs Hapi Sutherland. Mrs Ahipene, Featherston, was the guest of her daughter, Mrs Karaitiana, for a few days. At the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Karaitiana on Tuesday the Maoris >'f the district assembled to farewell Cadet-Seamen R. Te- Whaiti and T. Tewiata. There were also present a large number of pakeha friends from Masterton, Greytown and Pirinoa. The former was presented with .a moijpy belt and fountain pen on behalf of the Maoris of the district. The latter was presented by Mr J. Carter on behalf of the residents of the district with a suitable gift. Dancing and singing helped to pass away a most enjoyable evening. Messrs McDonald (piano), Bevan (piano-accordion), and Miss Ina Te Whaiti provided the dance music.
