FEATHERSTON DAMAGE

SHOPS AND HOUSES STOCKS OF GOODS DESTROYED 51 SPLENDID WORK BY SOLDIERS. Featherston was badly hit by the earthquake and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the chimneys in the town were shaken down. Shops and private residences were damaged and stocks of goods destroyed. The Bank of New Zealand, P. H. Wilton’s garage and the Post Office were the worst sufferers in the business area, while the residences of Messrs J. W. Card (Mayor), H. Lawson and C. J. Carlyon were damaged to a considerable extent. A number of soldiers rendered excellent service in demolishing dangerous brick and concrete walls and chimneys. Their services were greatly appreciated by die residents of the town. Electric powei and lighting was cut off for some hours.
