MASTERTON-WOODVILLE SECTION TWO BRIDGES DAMAGED. LINES OUT OF ALIGNMENT NEAR EKETAHUNA. Damage to the railway lines in the Wairarapa and Manawatu has been repaired in every area affected except that between Masterton and Woodville. It is not thought likely that this section will be reopened for two or three days. On the Wairarapa line a slip was discovered on the Rimutaka Incline, between Summit and Cross Creek. It was cleared by 4.20 a.m. The approaches to a bridge between Woodside and Carterton had sunk. With the completion of repairs at 4.30 a.m., the line was open from Wellington to Masterton. North of Masterton two bridges between Kopuaranga and Mauriceville had been damaged, and there were slips on the line between Mangamahoe and Eketahuna, and between Eketahuna and Mangatainoka. The earthquake had twisted the tracks out of alignment at a place between Eketahuna and Hukanui. On the Manawatu line, a slip was found to have blocked both, tracks of the double line just south of Plimmerton. This was cleared by 7.30 a.m. Between Paraparaumu and Waikanae 19 lengths of rails had subsided, and between Waikanae and Te Horo 10 lengths had subsided. Temporary repairs were completed by 10.30 a.m., but trains have been going over the places very slowly as a precaution against any undiscovered disturbance having occurred in the ground under the track.
