ROADS & BRIDGES

BIG REPAIR BILL FACED IN MASTERTON COUNTY STRUCTURAL AND OTHER DAMAGE. DEEP CRACKS IN ROADWAYS. Serious damage has been done to roads and bridges in the Masterton County. The damage on the Mas-terton-Tinui road alone is estimated at something like £lO,OOO. Both the end trusses of the bridge over the Ruamahanga River at Te Whiti have been destroyed and the bridge will be closed for at least a week and probably longer. On the Bennett’s Hill-Taueru portion of the Mas-terton-Tinui road 50 per cent, of the sealed surface has been destroyed. Large boulders and slips are all over the road. Both wings of the Taueru Bridge have been badly shattered. The filling leading to the Taueru River Bridge on the Masterton-Stronvar Road has subsided three feet. Some structural damage has been done to the abutments. There is a very large slip on the Masterton-Stronvar Road, which is completely blocked at this point. The Wangaehu Road generally is in a very bad condition, some of the cracks, it is stated, being as much as ten feet deep. The approaches to the Wangaehu Bridge at Te Ore Ore have subsided.
