BRIEF LULL

FULL-SCALE ENEMY ATTACK LIKELY TO CONTINUE. FEW ESCAPES FROM TOBRUK. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) RUGBY, June 23. Authoritative quarters in London point out that the latest Middle East communique indicates that there was a temporary lull in the Libyan fighting yesterday. They consider that this lull may well, however, prove short-lived and expect that the Germans will continue a full-scale offensive against Egypt at the earliest moment possible. Regarding Tobruk, it is disclosed that the garrison which held the fort throughout the fighting was largely South African, but the South African force which was withdrawn from Gazala did not go into Tobruk. After Tobruk became invested, only very small bodies of men were able to escape, some by sea. some by land. Another message quotes the Cairo correspondent of the “Daily Express” as stating that some members. of the Tobruk garrison are still fighting on. The centre of resistance is Palestrina, five miles from the town, where South Africans, who are holding Italian forts, have resisted repeated attacks from German troops and Stukas. A late message from the same correspondent stated that strong German columns of tanks with all other arms were moving toward Fort Capuzzo, on the frontier. ROMMEL PROMOTED TRIBUTE TO AFRIKA CORPS. LONDON, June 22. The Berlin radio announced that Herr Hitler has sent a cable to General Rommel promoting him FieldMarshal. All German radio stations broadcast a two-minute speech by Rommel, who said that the Afrika Corps did super-human work in spite of the terrible privations. According to the Berlin radio, panzer forces crossed the Tobruk tank-traps on prefabricated bridges which were brought up on wheels. It says that Major-General Klopper is among five generals who were captured at Tobruk. He is aged 32 and is South Africa’s youngest general.
