CARRIED OUT BY TOBRUK GARRISON
Before Enemy Broke Into Fortress GENERAL SMUTS ON OUTLOOK IN NORTH AFRICA STRONG AND WELL-EQUIPPED FORCES STILL IN FIELD LONDON, June 22. _ Before the enemy broke into Tobruk the defenders—United Kingdom, South African and Indian troops—destroyed everything possible likely to be of value to the Germans. This work of demolition, it is stated, may have been more successful than was to be expected, considering the short time at the disposal of the garrison. Four ships laden with supplies escaped from the harbour during the fight. There was no question of embarking troops. The destruction of the greater part of our motor transport made any breakout of troops impossible apart from a few small parties which might have got away. There were some clashes yesterday between a motorised column and an enemy column 12 miles inside the Libyan border. . The Prime Minister of South Africa (General Smuts) said that while they should not minimise the seriousness of their losses there remained in the field strong, welLequipped forces, including the larger part of the South Africans sent to Egypt, besides reinforcements. These would play a vital part in the defence of Egypt.
