CHEESE FACTORIES
DEPLETION OF STAFFS SERIOUS POSITION DISCLOSED IN WAIRARAPA. MEN AVAILABLE FAR SHORT OF REQUIREMENTS. The serious position facing cheese factories in the South Wairarapa in regard to staff requirements for the coming season was brought under the notice of the Wairarapa Manpower Committee in the course of its sittings yesterday in the Lower Valley. “We had before us,” said the chairman, Mr T. Jordan, this morning, “the representatives of six cheese factories and in each case there was a very serious shortage of staff and the managers were at a loss to know where to turn to complete their staff for the opening of the season which is approaching. The figures for these factories are as j follow: —
“In one case,” said Mr Jordan, “we were informed that a member of the staff in one of the factories was going to an'other factory in the Hamilton district. We inquired from the manager if the change was due to a higher wage being offered, but we were informed that the wage was the same. The committee expressed the view that this member of the staff should not be allowed to go to Hamilton, but we have no power to prevent his going. The position is sufficiently serious to warrant our reporting it to the Director of National .Service, so that some steps may be taken by the appropriate au--thorities to remedy the present state oi: affairs.”
