GIANT AERODROME

IN PLACE OF VIRGIN SCRUB GREAT ENGINEERING PROJECT IN AUSTRALIA. CONSTRUCTION OF MASSIVE ‘ HANGARS. (Ely Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, June 19 On the outskirts of a little bush town “somewhere in Australia” one of the greatest engineering projects in the nation’s .history is nearing completion. Where there was only a paddock of virgin scrub as late as the last week in February, there is now a vast aerodrome, planned to carry several massive hangars and buildings for the greatest aircraft assembly and repair depot in Australia. Directly the job employs 2650 men and the cost will be about £3,000,000. Never before in Australia has so much money been spent on one project in such a brief period. It is the proud claim of the designers that this giant depot will be undetectable from the air. Members of the Civil Construction Corps are doing the work under the supervision of the Allied Works Council. Salvage of planes damaged in northern battles has already begun at the aerodrome. Three of the giant hangars have been completed. The fourth is under construction. Land has been prepared for another. They will house the largest type of plane likely to come to Australia .
