Details of railway revenue and expenditure for May were announced yesterday by the Minister of Railways, Mr Semple. He said that revenue earned by the Railways Department totalled £1,051,313, an increase of £136,937 (14.98 per cent) over that for May of last year. The .outstanding feature was that for the first time in the history of the department the revenue exceeded £1,000,090 in the May period. Passenger revenue, said the Minister, increased by £73,048 (39.79 per cent). Expenditure increased by £79,330 (10.57 per cent), and xvas mainly due to the provision of additional services necessary to meet increased traffic. The expenditure was also augmented by the payment of the second cost of living allowance front April 5 and the increased wages to lower paid members, including arrears for the April period.
