An announcement that special provisions had been made by the rationing controller for coupons to be made available to newly-married couples for the purchase of blankets and household linen, and that it was anticipated that these coupons would be available for distribution early next week, was made last night by the Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr Sullivan. He said that 78 coupons would be issued in fm ture to every newly-married couple as well as to those who had been married since the introduction of the Clothing Rationing Order —from and including Friday, May 29 last. Shortage of Shearers. Forecasting serious difficulties in the wool industry in the coming shearing season unless the present manpower situation was faced up to, Mr Cook, general secretary of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, at the annual conference yesterday said that he could foresee many difficulties arising on account of shortage of workers. “I have lost no opportunity of pointing this out to the parties concerned and particularly to the Government,” said Mr Cook. “So far, I know of no move that has been made to meet the situation. We are now asking for a register of all shearers and shed hands who are for the time being in the military forces to be taken with a view to releasing them for the shearing season.” The St John Ambulance Brigade will hold a dance in the Municipal Hall on Saturday night and patrons are assured of an enjoyable time. The supper arrangements are in the hands of a capable ladies’ committee, and the music will be supplied by Mr Jack Barnes and his Rhythm Boys. Members of his Majesty’s forces in uniform will be admitted at' reduced prices.
