CONFLICT AT SEBASTOPOL

Further Heavy Attacks by Germans Repelled ABORTIVE USE OF ENEMY TANKS RUSSIANS MAKE GOOD USE OF ARMOURPIERCING SHELLS LONDON, June 17. The Axis onslaught on Sebastopol continues without abatement. Six heavy attacks have been made within the past 24 hours. All the attacks were stemmed by a Soviet rifle unit. The spirit of the defenders has resulted in the Germans adopting new tank tactics. In the initial stages the Germans relied on artillery and aircraft to open the way for their infantry, but the plan failed. Masses of tanks were then thrown in. on a narrow front, but Soviet artillery stopped them in their tracks. The Germans assembled the tanks in groups of six or eight and the Russians dealt with them by using armourpiercing shells and hand grenades.
