The Rio de Janeiro newspaper “Og’lobo”, says that Spanish merchantmen are aiding the Axis submarines operating in the South Atlantic. It cites an instance in which a Spanish ship, the Aldecoa, supplied fuel to an. Axis submarine on the high seas. The Aldecoa arrived at Rio de Janeiro on May 25, and is notv having difficulty in obtaining fuel from American oil companies for her return voyage. The newspaper asserts that a large number of Spanish ships are plying between Buenos Aires and European ports, and also that many former Axis ships now fly the Spanish flag. MORE SHIPPING LOSSES. The United States Navy Department announced today that a mediumsized United States merchantman was torpedoed in the Gulf of Mexico on Friday. Four gunners and 11 seamen were killed, and 30 seamen were rescued after swimming for eight hours clinging to bits of wreckage. A message from Norfolk, Virginia, says that a submarine torpedoed two large ' United States merchantmen within view of thousands of persons at a Virginia beach resort. They then watched bombers, a Navy blimp and half a dozen surface vessels attack the submarine. One merchantman sank, and the other was towed to port. The fate of the submarine is not announced. One man was killed in the torpedo explosion, and 197 survivors were landed safely.
