RETIREMENT IN LIBYA
BRITISH TROOPS WITHDRAWN FROM GAZALA EIGHTH ARMY REGROUPED. ATTACKS ON NEW POSITIONS THROWN BACK. LONDON, June 16. It is officially announced from Cairo that Gazala, the westernmost Imperial strongpoint in Cyrenaica, has been evacuated. It was held by South Africans-- and Eiritish North Country troops. General Ritchie has regrouped his Eighth Army in Libya and so far all enemy attacks on the new positions have been thrown back. The enemy followed up quickly after our withdrawal from Gazala but was driven back with losses of tanks. A fresh attack must be expected. Axis forces at El Adem are digging in. Aircraft have resumed their attacks on enemy supplies. Heavy losses were inflicted on Axis transport and lorryborne infantry. Benghazi and objectives in Crete were also attacked.
