FIRING & BLACKOUT
ON NEW SOUTH WALES COAST OBJECT OUT AT SEA SHELLED. NO STATEMENT BY DEFENCE AUTHORITIES. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, June 15. The coastal batteries at Newcastle opened fire at an object off the coast last night. Searchlights swept the sea and the guns kept up a barrage. The defence authorities decline to disclose the cause of the action. The firing, which was not returned, was preceded by a blackout in the Newcastle area and a stand-by warning to National Emergency Service wardens. Sirens were not sounded, but hundreds of people went to the shelters and remained in them till the firing ceased. The shells from the guns appeared to be directed toward a point on which searchlights were focused. Observers state that the searchlights appeared to be following an object through the water, but they could see nothing resembling a submarine.
