The hopes of Newmarket race crowds for a Royal double in the Oaks and Derby were not realised when the King’s colt, Big Game, was beaten out of a place in the Derby. The race resulted as follows: THE DERBY STAKES, for three-year-old colts and fillies. One mile and a half. Watling Street, 9.0 1 Hyperides, 9.0 2 Ujiji, 9.0 3 Won by two lengths. Time, 2.29 3-5. The'winner is owned by Lord Derby. Their Majesties were present both days of the meeting. It was the first time they had attended a race meeting since the outbreak of war.
