GANDHI’S IDEAS
NON-VIOLENCE TOWARDS JAPANESE HONOURABLE MEANS OF DYING. IMPENDING CONSIDERATION BY CONGRESS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) BOMBAY, June 14. The Congress Working Committee is meeting at Wardha early in July to consider Mr Gandhi’s proposals that Congress should adopt a policy of nonviolence towards the Japanese. , Mr Gandhi, writing in the “Harijan, outlines the policy of non-violence He says neither food, shelter nor aid of any sort should be given to the Japanese. “If you are afraid of death,” he adds, “you should evacuate infested places. If people are unfortunately captured they will probably, be shot if they don’t obey orders and do forced labour. If captives face death cheerfully, their task is done. They will have saved their own country’s honour. They could have done nothing more if they had offered violent resistance, except perhaps taken a few Japanese lives, thus inviting terrible reprisals. You will neither submit to torture nor to the enemy’s orders. I think you will find an honourable means of dying instead of going through inhuman tortures.” .
