AIR ATTACKS
ON JAPANESE IN ALEUTIAN ISLANDS ENEMY SHIPS REPORTED AT KISKA. SMALL-SCALE LANDINGS ON ATTU. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 13. A Navy Department communique issued yesterday stated: “Japanese forces have made small-scale landings on Attu Island, at the extreme tip of the Aleutians, and Japanese ships are reported in the harbour of Kiska, in the Rat Group. Japanese operations in the Aleutian area are still progressing, though continuing attacks by United States army and navy aircraft forced them, to retire from populated areas of the islands. The weather conditions in these outlying islands precluded air search operations till the last 24 hours.” Attu is a small, rocky island, having little apparent strategic value. Leading naval authorities in Washington believe the Japanese are seeking to make a prestige attack against this remote territory in order to offset the reverses in the Midway battle. Kiska has a good harbour.
