The president of the Retail Traders’ Association said the Australian standard of living, as fixed by the Arbitration Court, would be severely reduced. It would take more than.2oo coupons to buy the clothing considered necessary for a man by the Court and more than 230 for a woman. The Australian scale has been modelled on the British plan. The main differences are those caused by climate and the supply of various yarns. Cotton has a high coupon value in Australia because of supply difficulties. The coupon value of the principal articles of men’s wear is as follows:— Three-piece suit, 41 coupons; overcoast, 40; sports coat 25; trousers (non-wool-len), 12; . pyjama suit, 15; shirt, 12; shoes, 12; singlet, 7; underpants, 7; hat, 6; socks, 6; ties and handkerchiefs, ration free. The coupon values of the principal articles of women’s wear are: Suit, 23 coupons; long-sleeved dress, 13; night dress. 11; shoes, 8; pair of stockings, 4; gloves, 3; hat 3. Goods excluded from the rationing scheme include made-up household linen, bedspreads, quilts, handbags and second-hand articles.
