CAPTURE OF HARMAT
BRITISH OFFICIAL REPORT. FIERCE FIGHTING CONTINUED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) RUGBY, June 7. Today’s Middle East communique states: “After very heavy fighting all day, some of our armoured units reached Harmat, which was previously occupied by the Twenty-first Panzer Division. ' ' “In the morning the enemy launched his main armoured forces at our troops holding positions at Knightsbridge. Our infantry and artillery, supported by our armoured forces, held this attack. Fierce fighting was continued throughout the afternoon. The enemy was driven back westward and British and Indian troops who had established themselves inside enemy positions west of Harmat on the night of June 5 held their ground all day. “The Free French at Bir Hachiem repulsed two attacks during the day, with heavy losses to the enemy. “Our air forces co-operated with our land forces throughout the day’s fighting with excellent effect and inflicted considerable losses on the enemy.” p
