CARD PARTY ENJOYABLE GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) A very successful flag 500 party was held in the Anglican Hall on Saturday evening. Mr L. C. Christie conducted the games. Mr M. Priest presented the prizes to the following winners:—Ladies: Mesdames F. C. Turner and Edwards; men, Messrs P. Fauvel and R. Farfeita. Selwyn Centenary. The Selwyn Centenary was celebrated at St. Cuthbert’s Anglican Church on Sunday evening. The Rev. G. E. Williams, Vicar, preached the sermon. There was a good attendance including representatives of the Borough Council and County Council. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs F. Horton, Dannevirke, are visitors to Eketahuna. Mr and Mrs M. R. Herbert and Mrs Liardet, have returned home after having visited Wellington. The late Mrs K. M. Nelson, who died recently at Hurleyville, was born at Bantry Eire in 1863, and arived in New Zealand in 1883. She took up hei’ first teaching appointment at the Tory Street Infant School, Wellington, under the late Mrs Francis. Later she was assistant at the Mauriceville West School where there were children of five nationalities. The only English speaking children being those of the headteacher. She was then transferred as assistant teacher to the Eketahuna School. Then she became headteacher at Newman, then the centre of a large sawmilling district, where there were over 100 pupils on the roll. Her only assistance was a pupil teacher whom she had to teach after school hours. Many of the children had to walk or ride seven miles through bush and over muddy tracks to the school. She resigned her position in 1899. While teaching at Mauriceville, Mrs Nelson married Mr Neil Nelson, the son of a pioneer settler. Her husband was then farming at Rongomai and later was county engineer at Eketahuna. She is survived by her husband, one son (Captain F. A. Nelson, Base Records. Wellington), and two daugh-, ters, Sister E. M. Nelson (Theatre Sister at the Bowen Street Private Hospital, Wellington) and Miss K. Nelson, of Hurleyville.
