COLOGNE IN RUNS
FRANK ADMISSIONS MADE IN BERLIN BROADCAST TO SOUTH AFRICA. DESTRUCTION BEYOND DESCRIPTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, June 2. In a remarkable broadcast in German to South. Africa, the Berlin radio, dealing with the Royal Air Force raid on Cologne, declared: “Already 4748 dead and wounded have been counted, and many more are still cut off in shelters. The destruction in Cologne is beyond description.” The broadcast, which was picked up by monitors of the Australian Department of Information, says: “From Agnes Church to the Post Office, from the Hohestrasse to the Breitestrasse and the Opera House, and particularly the Severin' district, are all one mass of ruins. All telephonic communications are cut off. Heartrending scenes have been witnessed, and 2500 barracks and 3000 tents have been placed at the disposal of the civil defence organisation to house the homeless, and all reserve stores have been thrown open to feed the wretched victims.”
