Vital statistics recorded at Masterton in May were, figures for the corresponding period of last year being given m parentheses: —Births, 19 (31); deaths, 11 (7); marriages, 11 (13). Wheat Growing.
Further consideration to the growing of wheat in the Wairarapa is. to be given on Friday by a meeting of farmers to be held in Masterton at 2 p.m. One of the matters to be discussed is whether compulsion should be used to secure the acreage of wheat required in the district. Building Permits.
No building permits were issued by the Masterton Borough Council last month, as only defence work is being sanctioned meantime by the Building Controller, to whom all applications must be referred. The Masterton County Council issued two permits for a value of £52. Unity Discussions.
The discussions between the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, on the question of national unity, including the proposals of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association for an extended War Cabinet, will be resumed in Wellington today. An exchange of views took place between the party leaders on Friday, their meeting lasting about an hour and a half. Dredging Compan/’s Profit.
The accounts of the Grey River Dredging Company (West Coast) for the year ended December 31, show a net profit of £32,794, compared with £38,203 for the previous year, and £47,516 in 1939. The dredge was in operation for 6310 hours, or 84,8 per cent of possible dredging time, and treated 4,669,802 yards for 12,075 crude ounces of gold, realising £125,149. This represents an average recovery of 6.52 d. a cubic yard of gravel. Total operating cost, including taxation, was £89,935, equal to 4.68 d a yard dredged.
