RUBBER SHORTAGE

MORE SEVERE RESTRICTIONS IN AUSTRALIA. EXTENSION TO BICYCLE TIRES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 g.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. Heavier restrictions on the sale of tires for motor-cars and trucks will be imposed today, when regulations setting up a system of tire priorities will be gazetted. Preference in the supply of tires will be given to vehicles used for war and essential civil needs. As the supply decreases, the priority system will practically eliminate sales of tires for pleasure vehicles. Regulations will be gazetted shortly restricting the sale of bicycle tires to owners of bicycles used for war essential civil purposes. The Supply Minister (Mr Beasley) stated that the Allies had lost ninety per cent of the world s rubber sources and that a drive for rubber, ranging from hot water bottles to discarded motor tires, would be stalled soon.
