TEMPORARY LULL

ON THE KHARKOV FRONT FURTHER HEAVY FIGHTING EXPECTED.. NAZI ATTACKS REPELLED N.W. OF MOSCOW. LONDON, June 1. In Russia a temporary lull is reported on the Kharkov front, but some messages say the lull is a prelude to further heavy engagements. In the Rjev sector, north-west of Moscow, General Zhukov’s armies are meeting strong German attacks. The enemy appears to be using masses of tanks and guns, but so far the Russians have had no more difficulty in dealing with these attacks than in the area east of Kharkov. Local attacks by both sides are reported on other parts of the Russian front. EARLY FLARE-UP \ ON THE SOUTHERN FRONT. REGARDED AS INEVITABLE. LONDON, May 31. “Despite German announcements that the Battle of Kharkov is over, there is certainly another stage ahead,” says “The Times” Stockholm correspondent. “Heavy fighting is going on, not only towards Isyum, but nearer Kharkov and operations immediately around Kharkov, or between Kharkov and the sea, must inevitably again flare up as soon as one side is able to resume the offensive. The “Red Star” reports that the Russians are consolidating and fortifying 400 points captured during the Kharkov fighting. Important operations are brewing on the central front. The Germans are massing strong forces on the Smo-lensk-Viazma Railway. Russian preparations in this sector are also well advanced. The Germans have already made several tentative local attacks. QUICKLY STEMMED NAZI ATTACK ON KALININ FRONT., (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) - LONDON, June 1. Large scale fighting has broken out on the Kalinin sector of the Eastern front. The Germans concentrated large forces of tanks and infantry on a narrow front and launched two attacks, but the Russians counter-attack-ed, drove the enemy back beyond their original lines and recaptured several villages.
