JAPAN’S LOSS OF FACE
OVER AIR ATTACK ON CITIES RETURN BLOW EXPECTED. BY AMERICAN WAR DEPARTMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 28. “The War Department considers that a Japanese air raid on the United States is inevitable, in retaliation for Brigadier-General Doolittle’s attack on Japan,” said Mr Stimson (Secretary for War) at a Press conference. He added that the Army was doing everything possible to meet the expected attack, which most likely would be made on the west coast. “Whatever happens,” Mr Stimson said, “we shall not relax our most effective defence, which is preparation for a major offensive.” Mr Stimson observed that, despite the great distance, an attack on Washington was not inconceivable. The loss of face Japan had suffered in Briga-dier-General Doolittle’s attack made a vengeance blow inevitable.
