MITRE PEAK CRASH
BURIAL OF TWO VICTIMS IN RANGES. ACCOMPLISHED ON TUESDAY. The burial of the two airmen who lost their lives when a Royal New Zealand Air Force plane crashed on Mitre Peak, in the Tararua Ranges in January was accomplished on Tuesday. ?.’he party which recovered the bodies from the wrecked' plane comprised five Air Force members, Mr Trass and Constable McCallum. The burial party left Masterton on Sunday morning. As the weather on Monday was too wild to allow the party to accomplish its task, no attempt was made that day to leave the hut on Mitre Flats. On Tuesday, however, the conditions had moderated sufficiently to enable the climb to the peak to be undertaken with reasonable safety. Special authority had been given to allow the burial of the two victims to be carried out in the ranges, in a common grave. This was done, the site selected being not.far from the place where the plane crashed. The names of the airmen were Leading Aircraftmqn R. A. W. Abrahams and Leading Aircraftman J. E. N. Corin. The party returned to Masterton late yesterday afternoon.
