MELBOURNE MURDERS
ARREST OF AN AMERICAN SOLDIER TRIAL BY COURT-MARTIAL PROBABLE. POLICE & ARMY CO-OPERATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 23. Following 'investigations by detectives and military police into the murders of three women in Melbourne this month, an American soldier was taken into custody and handed over to an armed guard. Detective-Inspector Carey, who has been in charge of the investigations, declined to make a statement on the subject of their long and arduous manhunt, except to say that the matter is now in the hands of the military authorities.
The soldier will probably be tried by court-martial for the murder of two of the women. The victims mentioned are Mrs Pauline Thompson, aged 31, and Miss Gladys Hosking, aged 41. The court-martial will be composed of United States army officers.
The Victorian chief of police states that no charge has yet been laid against the soldier as investigations are still proceeding in close co-opera-tion with the American army authorities.
