DESPERATE EFFORTS
MADE BY THE GERMANS To Stem Russian Offensive in Kharkov Area BREACH IN ENEMY DEFENCES WIDENED & DEEPENED STUBBORN FIGHTING CONTINUES ROUND TOWN OF KERCH
LONDON, May 19. Messages from Moscow show that Marshal Timoshenko s armies are fighting steadily towards Kharkov in spite of strong German counter-attacks. One report states that the oreacn in the German defences is being widened and deepened. The Germans are fighting desperately to defend a road between two large towns, both of which are vital links in the defence oi Kharkov. In this area one enemy regiment was wiped out and another lost half of its strength. It is believed in. London that the progress made by the Russians in the Kharkov sector must have upset enemy operations on other parts of the front. . With regard to the position in the Kerch Peninsula, m the Crimea, it is pointed out that when the Germans held. Kerch last year they were not able to make much use of it. Stubborn fighting is still going on around the town of Kerch. The Russians in Sebastopol are making frequent raids to relieve pressure on their comrades in the Kerch area.
