PERRY STREET TREES

PETITION PROTESTING AGAINST REMOVAL. BOROUGH COUNCIL DEFERS CONSIDERATION. j A proposal to cut out every second | tree in Perry Street was the subject of a petition of protest, presented at last night’s meeting of the Masterton. Borough Council. The petition was received from residents of Perry Street and others protesting against the recent decision of the council to cut down, certain trees in Perry Street and asking that the matter be given further consideration. The petition was signed by 71 names and was presented by Mr J. L. Murray. Councillor C. E. Grey moved that the trees be left as they were. Councillor A. D. Low seconded the motion. Councillor H. E. Gardner said the best avenues in Masterton were those in which the trees were a chain apart. By shifting every second tree in Perry Street they would improve the street and make it lighter. Councillor G. D. Wilson said the beauty of the street would not be affected if certain trees were removed and on the whole it was a dark street. The Mayor, Mr'T. Jordan, agreed with Councillor Wilson. The people living in the street should be given first consideration, observed Councillor Grey. In view of the fact that three councillors were absent it was decided to leave the matter over until the next meeting of the council.
