FORCED TO RETREAT

A communique says that the Chinese who are battling to prevent a further Japanese penetration into Yunnan wiped out half of a column of the invaders near Hungmushu. This and other repeated counter-attacks are forcing the Japanese to retreat towards Burma, via the Burma Road. Fighting is now progressing , south of Lungling. DAMAGING BLOWS STRUCK BY AMERICAN AIRMEN. EFFECTIVE CHINESE BOMBING OF BURMA ROAD. (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 17. The American Volunteer Group devastatingly raided Laokai, in IndoChina bombing enemy trains and causing heavy losses, reports the Associated Press of American Chungkingcorrespondent. Chinese bombers at-' tacked Japanese troops and motor trucks on the Burma Road, inflicting heavy losses of men and material. Central News (China) dispatches from Kunming state that Chinese reinforcements, after fierce artillery exchanges lasting for several days, crossed the Salween River and are now smashing ahead to the relief of_ their hard-pressed comrades in Southern Yunnan.
