REGARDED AS SERIOUS
DEPLETION OF FIRE-FIGHTING SERVICES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 17. The . serious results of the depletion of the ranks of the fire-fighting services were the subject of comment by the president of the New Zealand United Fire Brigades’ Association, Mr H. L. Warner, speaking at Waitara on Saturday night. Before the war, he said, there were 3000 fire brigade members in the Dominion, but already 623 had joined the armed forces. The executive of the association was promised that something would be done to retain trained firemen, but had continued to lose trained personnel. The position was becoming serious, and further representations were made, but no reply had so far been received. If a definite reply was not received in the very near future the associttion would make representations direct to Parliament.
