LAE BATTERED
EIGHT JAPANESE BOMBERS DESTROYED ENEMY FIGHTER SENT DOWN IN FLAMES. BUILDINGS LEFT ABLAZE. LONDON. May 17. Lae, in New Guinea, was attacked heavily yesterday by American and Australian bombers. Aerodrome buildings were left ablaze. A Japanese fighter was no sooner up than it was down again in flames. Another enemy fighter made off and eight Japanese bombers were destroyed on the ground. SERIES OF. RAIDS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. MELBOURNE, May 17. The Allied air force in a surprise raid on the aerodrome at Lae on Friday dropped bombs on the runway and started fires, stated a communique from Allied Headquarters. Today’s communique gives details of three more raids. It says: “Our air force attacked Lae aerodrome three times. Eight Japanese bombers were destroyed, and hits were made on anti-aircraft positions, runways and buildings. Numerous fires were started and one Zero was shot down. “On Deboyne Island, an enemy seaplan was damaged in an attack by Allied bombers.”
