EAST INDIES BATTLE
TOLL TAKEN OF JAPANESE SHIPS NEAR PALEMBANG THREE MONTHS AGO. SHIPS & BARGES SUNK. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) RUGBY, May 15. The Australian Air Department has told how a handful of Australian ant. British pilots, many operating from secret aerodromes in Palembang ant*. Sumatra, wrought havoc for 24 hours, on February 15, among invading Japanese forces of forty naval vessels and transports approaching the Palembang area. British bombers and fighters attacked, bombing and machine-gunning ships and loaded barges packed with soldiers. Transports, barges and destroyers were attacked from mast height. One 10,000-ton ship and one of 4 000 tons packed with troops were sunk. while one of 5,000 tons and another of 3,500 tons were left blazing. It is estimated that twenty barges were sunk. Three Japanese planes were destroyed and five were damaged during the engagement.
