BURMA ROAD
RESISTANCE TO JAPANESE THRUST MAINTAINED BY CHINESE TROOPS. ENEMY OFFENSIVE LAUNCHED IN CHEKIANG. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.35 p.m.) CHUNGKING, May 15. A communique says: “Heavily reinforced Japanese forces have fought their way into Tengyueh but fighting in that area is still in progress. 'I he main Japanese column, which has driven 125 miles up the Burma Road is reported to be still at Hungmushu, on the west bank of the Salween Rivei, where the Chinese are attacking. Inside Burma Japanese troops are advancing northward along the railway from Mandalay. “They occupied Kini Station on May 9, while Japanese, advancing westward from Bhamo. made a forced crossing of the Irrawaddy River on the evening of May 10. being bitterly resisted by the Chinese.” It is authoritatively stated, a London message says, that some Chinese are still fighting in the neighbourhood of Maymyo and north-west of this area. The Japanese to the northeast are in two columns. One is believed to be making towards Paosnan and the other towards Myitkyina. A United Press correspondent at Chungking says 30,000 Japanese, supported by an aircraft-carrier in Hangchow Bay. have launched an offensive in the coastal area of Chekiang. The Central News Agency reports that bitter fighting has been going on since Monday south of the town of Siaoshan.
