ASSAULT ON KHARKOV
PRESSED ON BROAD FRONT Second Line of Enemy Defences Readied COUNTER-ATTACKS BY GERMAN RESERVES REPELLED RUSSIAN RESISTANCE STIFFENING IN KERCH / PENINSULA LONDON, May 15. Marshal Timoshenko’s troops are reported to have reached the German second line defences in the Kharkov area and to have penetrated to a considerable depth on a front ox 40 to 50 miles. Large enemy reserves brought -up have railed to check the Russians. The “Izvestia” states that the Germans m their retreat left behind masses of arms and material and that counterattacks launched by the enemy all failed. The “Red Star” states that in the Kalinin area the Kus-, sians have driven the Germans out of a number of important positions. On the Kerch Peninsula, in the Crimea, the Russian ance is said to be stiffening. The Germans reported today that fighting is in progress on heights overlooking the tovzn of Kerch, which apparently is still in Russian hands.
