ORGAN RECITAL
FINE PERFORMANCE BY SOLDIER ARTIST. An excellent organ recital was given in the Methodist Church last night by Sergeant Maxwell Fernie, a wellknown Wellington artist and organist and director of the Eucharistic Congress Choir. Sergeant Fernie showed that he was a real artist. He played everything beautifully and his choice of items was a happy one. So skilfully did he handle his instrument that he gave the impression that it was an organ of much bigger proportions than was actually the case. Among the many excellent hems perhaps the most popular were an Allegretto by Wolstenholme, an Idyl by Faulkes and a Toccata by Milet. Mass Doreen Jamieson contributed two vocal solos, for which the accompaniments were played by Sergeant Fernie. The programme was as follows: — Choral Preludes, “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” “Mortify Us By Thy Grace” (Bach); Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (Bach); Corant and Minuet (Battishill); Larghetto in F Sharp Minor (3. S. Wesley); Soprano solo, Miss Doreen Jamieson, “Fear Not Ye, O Israel” (Dudley Buck); Le Cygne' • (Saint Saens); Traumerei (Schumann); Can'zona (Guilmant); “Tu es petra et portae infer! non praevalebunt adversus te”—Toccata (Mulct); Soprano solo, Miss Doreen Jamieson, “Song of Thanksgiving” (Allitsen); Idyl (Falkes); Allegretto (Wolstenholme); Cffertoire sur deux Noels (Guilmant) ; Toccata (Finale— Symphonic V) (Widor).
