HOSPITAL LEVY

$ INCREASE IN EXPENDITURE SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS. POSITION OF MASTERTON COUNTY. Notification that the Masterton County Council’s levy for the year amounted to £6,736, as compared with £4,885 last year, was received by the Masterton County Council, at its meeting yesterday, from the Managing-Se-cretary of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. “Representations should be made for an increase in the payment of 6s per day under the Social Security scheme,’’ said Councillor P. R. Welch. “Costs are increasing yet the Social Security payment remains the same.” Councillor H. H. Mawley (who is chairman of the Wairarapa Hospital Board) said the Social Security scheme had eased the burden, but the trouble was the increase in hospital expenditure. The increased cost was being borne by the ratepayers and the Government and the weakness of the position was that not enough money was obtained from the Social Secuuty Fund. It was necessary to keep a careful watch on hospital expenditure, as it might eventually be a very heavy burden. No action was taken.
