NAVAL LOSS
THREE BRITISH DESTROYERS SUNK IN ENGAGEMENT WITH NAZI BOMBERS. OVER 500 OFFICERS & MEN SAVED. LONDON, May 12. Over 500 officerssand men were saved when three British destroyers were sunk in the Mediterranean by German bombers.' The Admiralty states that the total casualties are not expected to be heavy. The destroyers sunk were the Lively, of 1920 tons, and the Jackal and Kipling, each of 1690 tons. The enemy bombers were attacked by Beauforte fighters, which destroyed one Heinkel 111 and damaged two other Heinkels and five Junkers 88s. The engagement began yesterday afternoon, when four British destroyers were attacked heavily by German aircraft. The Lively was hit and sank. Later, the Kipling and Jackal were both hit and the Kipling sank. The Jackal was taken in tow but had to be sunk by our own gunfire early this morning.
