CHARGE OF MURDER
MAORI BEFORE COURT. DEATH OF STEPDAUGHTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HAMILTON, May 12. A plea of not guilty was entered by Hohua Ahinaka Kino, 36, a Maori farm labourer, before Mr Justice Johnston at Hamilton to a charge of murdering his stepdaughter, Rita Emery, at Otewa, Otorohanga, on Febiuary 14. Mr H. T. Gillies, for the Crown, said that accused lived with his wife and the latter’s daughter Rita Emery, aged 18 in a cottage on Tipping Bros’ farm at Otewa. Early in February _ Rita Emery tried to break her association with accused and took a position in Otorohanga. Evidence would show that Kino spent the evening of February 13 with the girl in Otorohanga. Early next morning the girl was struck on the head in a paddock a mile from Kino’s cottage. She was rendered unconscious and was then strangled and killed. Kino was a hard-working man of previous good character. Evidence was given by Kahu Ponga Kino, accused’s wife, and Dr R. C. Bonnington. The case was adjourned.
