FROM SOUTH-AMERICA , GERMAN & ITALIAN DIPLOMATS THOUSANDS OF CLANDESTINE LETTERS. SEIZED BY BRAZILIAN POLICE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, May 6. Upwards of 400 German and Italian diplomats are departing homeward today, many reluctantly. According to Brazilian officials, Signor Ugo Sola, the Italian Ambassador, unsuccessfully appealed to the authorities to intern him with 200 Axis nationals accused of subversive activities. The postal authorities seized thousands of letters from Europe aboard the Portuguese ship Serpatpinto, presumably intended for clandestine delivery to innumerable American destinations. The letters were unstamped and were from Axis and Axis-occupied countries. Three seamen on the Serpapinto who were arrested admitted that 15,000 United States dollars taken from them had been supplied by an Axis agent to buy platinum. The Serpapinto is scheduled to sail for Lisbon today with 150 German and Italian diplomats.
