RUBBER SHORTAGE IN U.S.A. DRASTIC ACTION SUGGESTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, May 6. Senator Reynolds, chairman of the Senate Military Committee, in an interview, quoted the testimony of several Government officials in closed session as saying that the lack of rubber had become perilous from a military standpoint. He predicted that the Government would be forced to take over every of rubber not used for essential purposes. Senator Austin said that no rubber would be available for civilian purposes for a year. Seven high-ranking officials urged the committee to approve of legislation authorising the requisitioning of automobiles and tires. Senator Reynolds said that people with more than five tires for a car would be compelled to make transfers to the Government.
